i was excited when i received an e-galley of The Burgess Boys from Net Galley. i loved Amy and Isabelle, and although i did not read Olive Kitteridge, i heard wonderful things. Strout is an exquisite writer, and she does a fabulous job of depicting how messy we humans can be...can feel and act, too. the actual plot didn't grab me so much...but it's okay...the revelations come when we realize that things/people aren't always how they appear on the outside. Bob floats long, seems aimless, but he's not. Jim's got the world in the palm of his hand, but he doesn't. Susan seems cold and angry, but she's not. indeed, life is messy and so is love, whether it be between mothers and sons, brothers, husbands and wives.
