i LOVED this book...i knew next to nothing about napoleon (other than the complex that bears his name!) and even less about his queen, so i was very intrigued to read about their lives. although most of this first book in gulland's trilogy is spent on josephine's (rose) early life, and napoleon doesn't show up until the very end, it's a fascinating look at 18th century france and the reign of terror. i thought the format, diary entries, would bother me, but it did not. i really liked rose, and enjoyed watching her character develop as she struggled to keep her family together during this tumultuous time in france's history. she was TRULY a revolutionary woman and i can't wait to read about her as queen, as well as napoleon, in tales of passion, tales of woe.
